Remote Desktop
Remote Desktop is a tool developed my Microsoft that allows users to access a server from anywhere in the world, and use it as if you were physically sitting in front of it.
Remote Desktop is installed by default in Windows XP and Vista, and can be downloaded from Microsoft for earlier versions.
To access in Windows XP, simply do the following:
Click on Start -> Accessories -> Communications -> Remote Desktop Connection.
Please note that for computers with XP Service Pack 3 installed, the Remote Desktop Connection will be found in the Accessories folder.
To access Remote Desktop in Windows Vista, simply click on Start and then type in Remote Desktop Connection.
When Remote Desktop starts, you will see the following:

Enter in the name of the server you are trying to connect to in the Computer box. Please contact AB Consulting or your host if you have not been supplied with your server address.
If you are wishing to access data on your computer from the server, click on the Options button. Then click on the Local Resources tab. Click on the More button and then make sure there is a check next to Drives in the Local devices and resources window.

Please Note: Older versions of the Remote Desktop client have the option to connect the drives onthe Local Resources tab, below the Printers* setting.
Once logged in, the screen will look identical to a normal computer, except for the yellow toolbar at the top of the screen:

You can use this toolbar to minimise the screen, or close the session, just as you would a normal window. If you do choose to close the session, you session will remain active, which can be handy if you need to step away for short periods. The session will be discarded after a set period of time, so please ask your host provider for details on your timeout periods.
The best way to exit the session is to use the Log Off button, which is accessible from the Start menu.
*Printer drivers will need to be installed for each printer you need to print from. Please contact your host provider for support.
